Tips for Designing in Small Spaces!

Having less space does not mean you can't have the home of your dreams! You can still show off your style in small spaces, it's all about planning and working with what you have. In this post I will go over my best tips for working in small spaces to help you create the home you've always wanted!

You've probably already heard about this tip as it can be used in many situations. Putting a mirror in your small space, especially as a focal point, will create the illusion that the room is bigger than it is. It helps to open up the space and reflects more light into the room. This tip is simple and can often be overlooked but it does the trick!

Lighting and Colours

When designing in a small space the key is to make it seem bigger than it is. Playing with different colours can help you achieve this! Stick to more neutral colours as your base, having dark wall colours will make the space seem smaller as they will absorb more light. Add your dark or bold colours as accents either in your decor or your furniture. Natural lighting is very important in keeping your space open, don't obscure your natural lighting with furniture or dark coloured curtains. If your space doesn't have optimal natural lighting, play around with fixtures that don't take up a lot of room. This could mean installing wall sconces or changing the ambient lighting in your space.

The objects you place into your room will determine not only how much space you have but how functional the room is. In small spaces the best thing you can do is choose furniture that has multiple purposes. Add a couch/ottoman that has hidden storage, a desk that can fold into shelving, get creative! If you have a piece of furniture you really want to use and it's on the larger side make sure to keep these pieces up against the wall and not in the middle of the room. Self explanatory but important!

When choosing your decor make sure you are being selective. Spaces that are cluttered will tend to feel much smaller than they are so don't go overboard!

We have touched on rugs in the past but the rules are a little different in small spaces. The biggest mistake made is using a rug that is too large for the space. This will make everything in the room look much smaller. So be mindful when choosing your rugs, take measurements of your space and work well within them!
